Tara Palmer-Tomkinson on why her new fashion range is 'for everyone - fat, thin, sober, drunk'

The generally agreed etiquette when interviewing celebrities with, some – how shall we say - history, is that you go in gently. Start perhaps with a little fluffy questioning about whatever new product, religion or diet they’re currently plugging, in the hope that if you show sufficient good will, they’ll relax and open up about themselves.

No one, however, seems to have sent this particular memo to Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who veers so far off plug during our interview, that at various points I feel honour-bound to wrest the conversation round to Desiderata – the label of Oxford shirt-cum-bodies (or kubbis) which she recently launched.

But she’s not ready to talk about cuffs and snap fastenings yet.

Harvard Navy Kubbi, £195, Desiderata London

Three minutes into our meeting, she is demonstrating etiquette of another nature. I think it’s how to get out of a Lamborghini without flashing your knickers (clamp knees together at every swivel), but since she is simultaneously telling me about the oral sex lessons she received from a celebrated Madame, it’s not unambiguously clear.

Nor is it certain whether she learned these valuable life skills while at one of her finishing schools or later. The discreet staff in Blakes Hotel take all this in their stride. The restaurant is practically empty, although it is mid-lunch time. They won’t be making much from TPT either, who has one banana milk throughout, while a good natured make-up artist, who has worked with Tara “for ever”, and I have tea and water.
I don’t get the chance to ask whether this is her normal sustenance. Suffice to know that, tightly held in by one of her kubbis and an old Alexander McQueen tweed skirt, she’s as strikingly slender and nut-brown as the “notorious” It Girl who dominated all those column inches in the 1990s.

Back then it seemed that Tara was omnipresent. Daughter of Patti (an Anglo-Argentine–Brazillian beauty) and Charles Palmer -Tomkinson (former Olympic skier) and sister to the virtuous Santa, who under her married name of Sebag Montefiore went on to become a successful novelist. She starred in Walker’s Crisps ads, on Tatler covers, attended openings great and small and was a runner-up on I’m a Celebrity. Yah! the title of her weekly column in The Sunday Times (ghost written by Wendy Holden, who cited PT as a major inspiration for a subsequent string of best selling social satires) was a literary landmark of sorts, pre-empting an era clogged with celebrity endeavours.

Her partying days are far behind her. Her appearance at the Royal Wedding in 2010 (the Palmer-Tomkinsons are close friends of Prince Charles’s) was the first most of us had seen of her for years.  “I designed that dress you know. It looks quite simple, but underneath it was like Piccadilly Circus.”

Gigi Hadid's $70 Sunglasses Should Be Your Next Spring Accessory

On Friday night, while you were probably getting ready to hit da club with your girls, taking down another glass of pinot while watching House of Cards, or just hanging at home (because, long week) Gigi Hadid attended her boyfriend Zayn Malik's album release party in NYC.

Looking her usual cool-but-not-so-cool-it-kills-you self, Hadid sported a casual red jacket, matching pants, a white sweatshirt, and rose-colored glasses that (most likely) match her equally rosy outlook on life.

Now, about those glasses. We're not one to endorse sunglasses at night, but after seeing Gigi in them we might change our tune. The Kimono Stella specs are slightly oversize, which means their structured frames will work for almost any face shape. Plus, at $70, this playful accessory is exactly what your wardrobe needs this season. Shop them now and then see just how many times you'll wear them this summer.

Behati Prinsloo Shows Off Baby Bump, Talks Tracksuit Style at Juicy Couture Launch

Would you give the velour tracksuit another chance? What about if Behati Prinsloo, supermodel, mother-to-be, Victoria's Secret Angel—and current star of Juicy Couture's ad campaign—asked you to? That's what Juicy is banking on this spring. The iconic 2000s brand has teamed up with Prinsloo to bring us Behati x Juicy, a 26-piece collection full of cropped T-shirts, denim dusters, and of course velour shorts and pants, dropping April 15.

Ahead of the launch, I sat down with Prinsloo at a launch party at The Dream Downtown in NYC to chat favorite Juicy memories, who wore it the best, and what she really thinks of guys who wear tracksuits.

Congrats on the campaign! What made you want to team up with Juicy?

They came to me and kind of just presented this really awesome idea of collaborating with me on a line. It really intrigued me so I said yes.

Had you been a Juicy fan over the years?

It's such a iconic brand. I remember growing up and seeing J.Lo and Britney [Spears] and all these girls in a full-on one color solid jumpsuit with the Juicy on the butt and it was always very awesome.

We were in the office today discussing Juicy tracksuit history and who pulled it off the best. I said J. Lo and others said Paris Hilton. Who do you think?

Do you have a favorite Juicy memory from back in the day?

You know, because I didn't grow up in America, I think my favorite Juicy memory would be designing something with them. And also just those iconic celebrities and seeing them in their tracksuits.

What did you think of the phenomenon as someone who didn't grow up in America?

You know it was definitely funny. It was definitely like a phenomenon. I remember the early 2000s and I wasn't even in New York yet. I was still at home and even the Kardashians, they were all wearing it. It was wild! Paris Hilton, all of the those girls. It was definitely something that made me go, "Oh that's an interesting vibe."

There are a lot of tracksuits and velour in this collection that harken back to the early 2000s. How do you wear them in 2016 and not look dated?

With this line we took a lot of the classic pieces and gave it a different silhouette so it's baggier and cooler and kind of good for traveling. To pull off a tracksuit now, it's not about doing the double/double. Not doing the whole thing. But listen, if you can pull it off and you go for it then god bless.

What's the shoe situation around a tracksuit?

No heels. I think a sneaker or a slide is the best. It's supposed be comfortable or something to lounge in, you know.

Behati in her Juicy Couture duster coat

Candice Swanepoel stars in Juicy's main campaign with you. What's it been like to work so closely together over the years?

You know I love her and we get along so well and shooting that campaign together was really fun. On that same day I shot this campaign and she looked at all the stuff. It was nice to have your friend there who was loving all the pieces and giving you advice. She's my bestie!

Do you guys trade style advice?

For sure! We definitely take stuff from each other and get ideas from each other all the time. Because we travel so much too, she'll bring stuff back from Brazil. Or I'll send her pieces from my line. It's awesome.

You've mentioned travel a bunch. What pieces from the collection would you travel in?

I think the denim duster, you know can you dress it up and down. I take it to the airport because I don't like to be cold. But anything honestly. All the denim stuff, the long pants with a T-shirt or a hoodie. You can really wear this all. Except, I wouldn't wear the tiny, booty shorts.

I'm always impressed when I see celebrities travel in short-shorts.

I know, and like Uggs. Always short-shorts and Uggs.

OK, last question: Guys in tracksuits. Do or Don't?

[Laughs] Ah, that's hard. That's a tough question. Like an Adidas tracksuit? That's cool. I think you can only pull off a full velour tracksuit if you're like, 80. And it's brown. And you're a gangster or something. That's good.

Is there a hat involved?

There could be. Totally.

Salvatore Ferragamo's Creative Director Steps Down

And the game of designer musical chairs continues. On Thursday, Massimiliano Giornetti left his role as Salvatore Ferragamo's creative director after 16 years with the brand, WWD reports. Giornetti joined the Florence-based company in 2000 to design and develop menswear. He designed his first women's collection for fall 2010, and was promoted to creative director in 2011.

Prior to Ferragamo, Giornetti worked with Rome-based haute couture designer Anton Giulio Grande. No replacement has been announced and Ferragamo's in-house team will continue designing for the brand.
