3 Trendy Hairstyles That Work With Thin Hair

Half-up, half-down hairdos are en vogue again. We can't get enough of the top knot version we spotted on Jennifer Lopez this month in Prince Royce's "Back it Up" music video. Sometimes trendy styles like these are hard to do if you don't have a ton of thick, lustrous locks. You know what I'm saying, you wind up looking like you only have three strands of hair on your head! Fortunately, you can still make them work: All it takes is some clip-in extensions and a few flicks of the wrist to fake celebrity-style volume.

To get Jennifer Lopez's look, start by snapping your clip-in hair extensions onto the roots of your hair, keeping them below the crown. We tried Irresistible Me Silky Touch extensions and began with a three-clip weft in the lowest section, followed by two, two-clip extensions placed side by side. To help the clips stay on, you can tease the hair near the root and add some hairspray to create texture for the hair to grab onto. Next, curl your hair with a one-inch curling wand. Then gather the front section of your hair and pull it into a ponytail, leaving out some hair around the temples to keep everything looking effortless. Tease the ponytail lightly with a teasing brush or comb (a big hair lover's best friend!) for texture and volume then wrap it around the base of the ponytail, pinning it into place as you go. Finish off the bottom section with some texturizing hair spray.

Clip-in extensions can also add a little va-va-voom to your go-to braid. For this style, start by brushing your hair onto the left side of our head. Next, stagger a few of the one-clip and two-clip wefts in the middle sections of your hair to keep them hidden. Once you reach your desired volume, create a side ponytail and wrap a small section of your hair around the hair elastic for a more polished look. Then create your braid (we went-for a three strand option) and secure the ends with a hair elastic so that it lasts all day.

The hair donut has zero calories and is one of the easiest ways to fake a bigger chignon in no time. To get started, gather your hair into a ponytail. Slip your hair through the donut hole until it is flush against your head. Instead of hiding the donut by simply fanning your hair around it and securing it to the base of the ponytail with an additional hair elastic, grab small sections of your ponytail, tease it with a brush or a comb, wrap it around the donut and use pins to secure the hair on the underside of the hair piece making sure that you can't see any of the material through your hair in the end. The extra step of teasing the hair will keep the style from looking overly done.
